I am commanded by the Army Council to inform you that Mr. Robert Hotung (Chinese name Ho Chai Lai) son of Sir Robert Hotung of Hong Kong, renounced his British nationality at Bow Street on August 4th last. Relevant extracts from Home Office correspondence are attached hereto.

The Secretary of State will be aware of the circumstances under which this Chinese gentleman was permitted to be attached to a special unit of the British Army (2nd Battalion of the Royal Tank Corps at Farnborough) namely, that he was a British subject, and also on account of the influence he might be supposed to exert in China in the future.

While the renunciation of his British nationality and assumption of alienage may or may not indicate anti-British motives, the Army Council cannot continue their permission for a foreign officer to remain with the particular unit in question. They have, therefore, taken appropriate steps to bring his attachment to a conclusion forthwith.

Office.
